Kalavantin Durg :

Kalavantin Durg Pinnacle is believed to have been built during the time of Buddha or in or around 500 BC for a queen named Kalavantin. The fort is accessible through steps that were cut into the rock of the hill and looks quite impressive given the technology and advancement in those old times. Not much is known about its history. Its a sad thing to know that the mysteries surrounding this fort will seldom be uncovered.

Known to be one of the best trekking spots in the Sahyadri mountain range Kalavantin Durg is a fortress at a height of 2,330 feet, off the old Mumbai-Pune road. Considered as moderate to difficult level trek, you can enjoy the view of the nearby Prabalgad Fort as well as see the city of Mumbai if the weather is clear. Once you reach the top you can see Prabalgad Chanderi Peb Matheran Irshalgad and Ulhas River.

Main attraction to Kalavantin Peak is the climb till Pinnacle. Steps have been carved in the mountain which take you to the top of Kalavantin Peak with no protection on one sde with exposure. One has to be very carefull in negotiating them. For many people trek ends here after looking at the exposure and size of steps. Monsoon time makes it more difficult wind adding to the diffculty after you climb the steps. A small rock patch needs to be climbed a rope will help for beginners.

Prabalgad :
one of the biggest forts in sahaydri ranges. Prabalgad is a huge uninhabited plateau near Panvel.
Even today one can go and explore it. It has two caves which can be accessed with spacious rooms within it. It offers fantastic views of Kalavantin Durg, Irshalgad, Matheran and Morbe waters., Matherans one tree hill, echo point, louiesa point, and sun set points can be seen from the fort.
The first fortification with steps is a fort called Kalavantin.Durg

Prabalgad lies on the Prabal plateau between Matheran and Panvel and can be seen from the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Ulahas River runs to the east of the fort. The Gadhi River, and the Chanderi and Peb forts are to the west. To the south is the Patalganga River and Manikgad fort and to the north is the Karnala fort.

History of Prabalgad :

There is not much mention of this fort in history. However in 1658, Shivaji Maharaj conquered Prabalgad from the Mughals, after establishing his powers in the Kalyan-Bhiwandi area. When Shivaji Maharaj attacked the fort, the Mughal Sardar and fort chief Kesar Singh forced himself and the ladies in the fort to commit suicide so as to save themselves from falling into the hands of the Marathas. His mother along with her grandchild hid inside the fort by the fear of Shivaji Maharaj but such was the greatness of Shivaji Maharaj that on finding them he sent them to their village with genuine respect and dignity.
